Which online degree program(s) do you teach?

Career Highlights:

Developing an Introduction to Business class using a TV show ("The Office"), and subsequently, surviving teaching freshmen for the first time!

  • Which classes do you teach online?

MANG 564: Leadership, Group Dynamics, and Team Building

  • What do you want students in your courses to learn? What is the learning outcome or objective?

In MANG 564 want my students to learn how to be effective and compassionate leaders and/or team members—however that might look to them. One way that this course facilitates this is by having students create their personal leadership philosophy, or how they choose to influence others. In the process, students complete a number of self-reflection and development exercises related to the course material to further refine their leadership philosophy as the course progresses.

  • What advice would you give to those considering this online MBA program?

I would suggest keeping an open mind. Through the coursework in Longwood's MBA program, you will encounter new topics and new experiences that might challenge what you've done or how you've thought in the past. Keeping an open mind to the unfamiliar or different will help you get the most out of your education and help you to develop into a strong leader and co-worker. Everyone comes into the classes with their own expectations, experiences, and opinions—don't be afraid to listen to others, but also to share yours. We can learn from each other!

  • Why did you start teaching?

I started teaching because to me, to be a teacher is to also be a lifelong learner. The learning process is a two-way street—my job is to introduce the course material and help students develop a deep understanding of the topics. In the process, I learn from the students as well because they may interpret, approach, or apply these concepts in a way that is different from how others (including myself) might do so. So, I really appreciate the interactions with students that I have in all of my classes.

  • Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.

In an alternate universe, my ultimate career goal would be to compete on the "Holiday Baking Championship" show. Here on earth, I settle for making fancy cupcakes, cakes, and cookies for special occasions.
